KUCHING: Police have advised Sarawak footballers to prioritise their personal safety and remain vigilant of their surroundings following a recent attack against a national footballer in the Peninsular.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata gave the advice when asked by journalists on the measures taken to safeguard Sarawak players amidst ongoing concerns.

“We have advised them to take care of themselves and to be cautious of their surroundings.

“At this point, there is no plan to hold a formal engagement session (with Sarawakian footballers). We just advise them to exercise caution and ensure their well-being,” he said after witnessing the handing over of duties for the Sarawak Management Department chief at the Sarawak Contingent Police headquarters (IPK) today.

On May 5, star player Faisal Halim was splashed with concentrated sulfuric acid in front of a shopping mall outside Kuala Lumpur.

The 26-year-old, who plays on the right wing for Selangor FC and Malaysia, suffered fourth-degree burns on the neck, shoulder, hands and chest.

Meanwhile, in response to a question on beefing up security for the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA), Mancha assured that the existing manpower in Sarawak is sufficient and would be effectively deployed.

He pointed out that there is no need to augment the force with additional personnel from other IPKs.

“Instead, we will optimise resources by reallocating personnel from various districts to fulfil SUKMA-related duties,” he said.

The 21st SUKMA will be held in Sarawak from Aug 17 to 24 this year. The Games will feature 488 events across 37 sports, and it is expected to bring together 12,619 participants, including 9,927 athletes and 2,692 officials.
