KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak Government will look into the feasibility of providing scholarships to Sarawakians who are undergoing part-time studies.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said there is no such arrangement made by the state government yet so far.

“But, we will see and we will consider accordingly based on the courses for our talent development,” he said.

He said this during the Sarawak Agenda Town Hall with Premier held in conjunction with the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2022 at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) here on Saturday (Oct 15).

In response to the issue of employment in Sarawak, Abang Johari said that there is a need to improve the economy that matches with the training taken by the students.

“At the moment, our economic growth is not that high as we base (our revenue) on (natural) resources only.

“We must add value to our resources and this requires a certain skill and expertise to achieve this.

“That is why we can see many Sarawakian working outside Sarawak because there is no job opportunity that is relevant to their training,” he said.

Abang Johari said that is why he and other Sarawak state leaders have discussed the need to improve the economy.

“To upgrade our economy, we need to use new approaches including the digital economy.

“With this, it will create a high demand for jobs and at the same time provide high returns to the state,” he said.

Abang Johari also with adding value to the state’s natural resources, this will allow investors to invest in this area of concern, and hence more job opportunities will be created for the locals.
