KUCHING: The Sarawak Heart Centre (PJS) in Kota Samarahan has been recognised as one of the top 100 best specialised hospitals in the Asia Pacific region, specifically for its expertise in cardiology.

Newsweek, an American weekly news magazine, collaborated with Statista, a German online platform specialised in data gathering and visualization, to identify the Best Specialized Hospitals Asia Pacific 2023 and ranked PJS number 48th on the list.

In congratulating PJS, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the recognition is proof of PJS’ status as a world-class health institution, saying it is the only public hospital in Malaysia to secure a position among the top 100 specialised cardiology hospitals.

“This is a recognition, acknowledgement and testimonial of the fine young men and women who started the service 22 years ago.

“Additionally, I am also honoured and privileged to be part of the great team,” he said in a Facebook post.

Dr Sim, who is a cardiologist and the former head of the PJS, said the Department of Cardiology of Sarawak General Hospital was set up on Jan 1, 2001, and was later relocated to Kota Samarahan.

“Five days before the relocation of services and operation of the new hospital, I was still unable to settle with the top management of the Ministry of Health (MoH) regarding the name of the new hospital.

He said the new hospital was later known as the Sarawak Heart Centre on Jan 1, 2016.

“I am so proud of the fine young men and women coming after me carrying on the services to new heights, getting the much-deserved recognition, acknowledgement, and respect by Newsweek.

“Personally, I am truly satisfied and grateful to my colleagues and team for believing in the same vision and pursuing the same mission as passionately now as 22 years ago.

“This is a collective effort of building Sarawak and showcases the capabilities of Sarawakians working together towards a common goal,” said Dr Sim.
