KUCHING: Sarawakian powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin who won Malaysia’s first-ever gold medal in men’s 72kg powerlifting category at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, is a shining example that sports is a career for all and dictated by competency and excellence.

In congratulating the 22-year-old world-class athlete, Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the latest achievements by Bunyau, a sports idol is where every aspiring athlete should emulate.

“Our sincere congratulations to Bonnie Bunyau for having won this gold medal for Sarawak in particular.

“This is a great and prestigious achievement for Malaysia in the international scene, every Sarawakian should be proud of his achievement,” he said today (Aug 28).

He added Bunyau’s family must be proud of their son’s achievement, and the ministry shares the same feeling of pride for him.

“Winning gold is one thing, but he broke the world record as well with a 228 kg lift, erasing the previous record of 227kg won by Mohsin Rasool from Iraq in 2016 Rio Paralympic.
