KUCHING: Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) hopes to attract the European markets and maintain Sarawak’s visibility worldwide by participating virtually in ITB Berlin Now 2021.

STB chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor said the state’s participation was an effort to make it a naturally preferred tourism destination during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is a challenging time for all industry players. However, positive developments such as the vaccine rollouts in the state and Malaysia generally have made tourism providers optimistic about travel and beyond.

“We hope the continuous fighting spirit among Sarawak’s industry players will push and accelerate the progress of rebuilding the tourism industry,” she said during STB’s participation in ITB Berlin Now held at The Waterfront Hotel here today (March 9).

ITB Berlin is the world’s largest travel trade fair that gathers over 10,000 exhibitors from up to 180 countries to exhibit their most innovative products and services in the travel industry. It is held annually in Berlin, Germany.

In November last year, the ITB Berlin organiser announced a new virtual platform of the event called ITB Berlin Now.

The virtual event is taking place from March 9 to 12 with Sarawak delegates participating from The Waterfront Hotel here from 5pm to 2am.

ITB Berlin Now covers business networking sessions and one-to-one meetings apart from offering a wide range of online travel business opportunities.

Joining STB as delegates during the event yesterday were the state tourism industry partners from Kuching, Sibu and Miri, namely Authentic Borneo Tours, Borneo Adventure, Business Events Sarawak (Sarawak Convention Bureau), Brighton Travel, Cat City Holidays, CPH Travel Agencies, Ecogreen Holidays, Greatown Travel , Innosar Holidays and One Wayang Tours.

At the launch, STB also showcased its latest destination video featuring niche tourism products in Cycling, Caving & Golfing.

A special campaign video featuring Bindi Irwin on Sarawak conservation efforts was also played.
