KUCHING: Sarawak has been the lead state in providing internet connectivity as a basic utility.
Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) general manager Dr Zaidi Razak said the internet improvement initiative in Kampung Sibu Laut is one of the efforts to provide basic facilities to rural residents.
“When we put internet facilities as basic facilities, we need to provide services to the community regardless of which area they are from,” he said.
He added that improving the internet facilities in Kampung Sibu Laut was a corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects of a local company, Reach10 Communication Sdn Bhd.
“The company in collaboration with SMA will install the permanent tower and coverage later on will cover areas of Kampung Sibu Laut including Kampung Alur,” he said, adding that high telecommunication towers were needed to get wider internet access.
He said with the permanent tower, the entire area of Kampung Sibu Laut and Kampung Alur could enjoy 4G internet coverage.
Meanwhile, Reach10 Communication Sdn Bhd director Leo Chin said the initiative has been implemented since last year. It has benefitted villagers in Long Bosan, Belaga; Long Moh, Marudi; Nanga Sumpa in Lubok Antu, Kampung Semilang, Kampung Beradek and Kampung Tiang Api in Kuching.
“Wifi Kamek in Kampung Sibu Laut has a bandwidth of 25Mbps with coverage of 50 metres from the village,” said Leo.
