KUCHING: Research suggests that rubber can be used as part of material to strengthen the road base for the construction of roads on peat soil.

And Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg wants to know for sure if this is feasible.

Stating that a research paper at 1st Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) Research and Development Symposium 2022 was saying as much, he urged SRDC to pursue the matter seriously.

”I would suggest that this proposal be looked into seriously with the Public Works Department (PWD) and I would like to have one road as part of this research using this material to build in a peat area.

“I will fund that road, using your technology so that we can assess whether it is effective or not, if its effective, it will be a breakthrough for us to construct roads on peat soil,” he said.

Abang Johari was speaking at the the official launching of the symposium at UCSI Hotel on Wednesday.

He said some of roads in Sarawak, one them in Sibu, between the Sibu Airport and Sibu town, is like the ‘landas’ season in a car.

“We maintain it, we pour another layer of bitumen. After few years it goes back, landas comes again.

“If you can make this a solution to construct roads on peat soil it would definitely change the whole landscape of road construction on peat soil areas,” he added.
