KUCHING: Individuals vying for support from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to boost their majority in a bid to assume premiership must have Sarawak’s best interest at heart.

Santubong MP Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the Sarawak government’s support for any federal government should not be viewed merely as making up the numbers.

“I personally think that Sarawak has a very simple approach in which the interests of Sarawak must be prioritised and the cooperation between the GPS components must remain.

“Whoever wishes to form a new government must take Sarawak into account, the state cannot be sidelined like what was done by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for 22 years and for 22 months by Pakatan Harapan (PH),” he said on Monday (Aug 16).

Wan Junaidi also expressed confidence in the leaders of Sarawak to remain united.

He disclosed that GPS MPs had a discussion over support for Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as a possible prime minister candidate.

“During the discussion, we heard from the likes of Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

“I have known Ismail Sabri for a very long time, he has a good character and leadership so I believe that he will get strong support.

“Thus, GPS should support him provided that we are not seen as those who will make up the numbers for a majority. We must hold a share in the administration and the interests of Sarawak must be given.”
