KUCHING: Sarawak Pay’s collaboration with UnionPay will help to leapfrog it to be accepted in China and the world market, said Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (Sheda) Kuching branch chairman Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok.

He said Sarawak Pay had shown its prestige through this partnership with an internationally renowned e-payment system, noting that UnionPay is the largest card payment organisation in the world offering mobile and online payments.

“This collaboration will help in the ease of doing business from Sarawak and Malaysia with China and the world. We can now pay and receive money with the world easily — even on the island of Borneo,” he said when contacted today.

He congratulated Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on his foresight and the success of the collaboration.

“Our Sarawak e-wallet payment system saves us much time and cost in assisting us in payments and small business transactions,” he said.

He said cashless transactions would help to reduce crime and provide convenience, in addition to being a safer option particularly during the current Covid-19 pandemic where physical contact through paper money is reduced.

“Sarawak Pay is highly accepted and appreciated in Malaysia because it does not charge any fees to users and merchants. It even gives cashback to users — this is a very attractive feature that helps users and merchants to reduce cost.

“We hope that this feature will be maintained to keep other e-payment systems competitive,” said Sim.

On the aim of seeking Bank Negara’s approval for a higher e-wallet limit of 1,000 Euro, he said this would further promote Sarawak Pay as an international cashless payment application.

“It will assist users as they will not have to bring around large amounts of cash when travelling, in addition to easing digital payment transactions in e-commerce,” he said.
