Sarawak police conduct successful operation against drug activities

KUCHING: The Sarawak Contingent of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) carried out a successful operation, Ops Tapis Khas Siri 3/2023, from July 10 to 12 in collaboration with the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) and other departments within PDRM.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri announced during a press conference here on today (July 13) that the operation, conducted simultaneously nationwide, aimed to put pressure on drug syndicates and disrupt drug-related activities in the community.

“A total of 163 raids and 364 examinations were conducted throughout Sarawak, leading to the arrest of 324 individuals involved in offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“Out of those arrested, 303 were males and 21 were females, ranging in age from 14 to 56 years old. Additionally, nine chronic addicts faced legal action under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.”

The operation also resulted in the execution of 16 drug-related arrest warrants and significant drug seizures, including 132.04g of methamphetamine (Syabu), 6.03g of Ketamine, and 102cm of marijuana plants.

“Among the areas with the highest drug seizure values were Miri (RM20,894), Kuching (RM4,959) and Padawan (RM3,960).

“During early urine screening tests, 255 individuals (79 per cent of the total) tested positive for various types of drugs, highlighting the prevalence of drug abuse in the community,” said Commissioner Mohd Azman.

JSJN Sarawak recorded a significant number of arrests—5,655 individuals to be exact—and drug seizures valued at RM127,675,784.02 from Jan 1 to June 30, this year with assets worth RM3,722,563.12 being forfeited.
