KUCHING: Following the increase of Covid-19 cases in the state, Sarawak police are given instructions to tighten the standard operating procedures (SOP) for the recovery movement control order (RMCO) period.

Sarawak Deputy Commissioner of Police Datuk Dev Kumar M. M. Sree explained that there are some who are not complying with the SOPs despite the high compliance level in the state.

“This (non-compliance) is especially in terms of wearing face masks and social distancing in crowded places.

“We find that non-compliance usually happens in rural areas where many who attend social gatherings do not wear face masks and do not adhere with social distancing.

“By doing so, it can bring danger and increase risk of the virus’ transmission,” he said at the daily Covid-19 update press conference.

For that, SDMC would like to stress that the capacity for public gatherings in social and official functions, will be set to 50 percent.

For example, if the capacity of a hall can accommodate 1,000 people at a time, the committee will only allow 50 percent (500 people) of the capacity of the hall to be filled.

Organisers are urged to ensure that hand sanitiser is provided, physical distancing is practised and all those present are required to wear face masks.

Dev Kumar also stressed that outdoor public gatherings are not allowed and whoever is found violating the SOPs will be issued compound notices on the spot.

“Now we (the police) are allowed to issue the compound notice on the spot and no longer need to bring the offender to the police station,” he told.

With that being said, the police have issued 32 compounds to errant individuals — 27 Kuching, four in Miri and one in Sarikei.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Local Government issued 104 verbal, written, and seizure warnings in areas under the supervision of various local councils.

Under Ops Benteng, a total of 1,215 vehicles were inspected at six roadblocks in five districts — two in Lundu and one each in Bau, Serian, Sri Aman, and Lubok Antu
