Sarawak ready for floods

MIRI: The state has taken all necessary measures to mitigate the potential impact of flooding, assured Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Lee told this after chairing a meeting with various government agencies including Bomba, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and Welfare department on flood management planning here yesterday.

“We have requested relevant departments such as the Public Works department Sarawak (Miri office), Bomba and APM to be on the standby mode as erosions and landslides are likely to happen during rain and flood,” he said.

Lee revealed that seven forward operating bases have been established within Baram area to help deliver food supplies during flood.

These forwards bases are located at Long Emang, Long Ikang, Long Jegan, Long Teran, Long Teran Kiri, Long Teran Kanan, and Long Luyang, he said.

Lee said the establishment of these forward bases in the rural areas would enable immediate supply of essential food and other items be delivered to flood victims.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological department’s weather report, Sarawak is likely to experience continuous rain until early next year.

Present at the meeting were deputy State Secretary Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, Telang Usan assemlyman Dennis Ngau, Miri District officer Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf and officers from various government agencies.
