Sarawak records 1,543 new cases

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 1,543 new Covid-19 new cases today (Aug 24), five cases less from the 1,538 cases reported the day before, along with two fatalities.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) stated that the cumulative total number of cases stood at 101,381 while the death toll was at 503.

It said that Kuching accounted for the highest number of cases at 812, followed by Subis (142); Bau (74); Samarahan (68); Mukah (54); Serian (53); Belaga (49); Sibu (47); Pusa (45); Bintulu (44); Selangau (37); Miri and Asajaya (15 each).

Eleven new cases were reported in Saratok; eight each in Song and Betong; seven each in Simunjan, Beluru, and Tebedu.

Kapit and Lundu recorded six new cases respectively; Sri Aman and Sarikei (five each); Dalat (four); Tatau and Matu (three each); Lubok Antu, Lawas, and Limbang (two each); and Kanowit and Pakan (one each).

“Of the new cases, 819 are individuals who had contact with positive cases, 356 are individuals linked with existing active clusters, 86 are from symptomatic individual screenings at health facilities, 278 cases are from other screenings at health facilities, and four cases are from Import B individuals returning from Sabah (two cases); and Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (one case each).

“A total of 1,322 cases or 85.58 percent are in Category 1 (no symptoms), 219 cases or 14.19 percent are in Category 2 (mild symptoms), and two cases or 0.13 percent are in Category 5 (lung infection and requires ventilator),” the SDMC said in its Covid-19 daily update.

The committee said that 1,545 new cases had been discharged from hospitals and Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs) in the state.

Of these, 1,073 cases were discharged from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and its PKRC; Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) PKRC (147); Serian PKRC (106); Serian Hospital (106); Sibu Hospital and its PKRC (73); Bintulu Hospital and its PKRC (50); Miri Hospital and its PKRC (35); Mukah PKRC (22); Sri Aman Hospital and its PKRC (17); Betong PKRC (12); Kapit Hospital and its PKRC (eight); Lawas PKRC and Sarikei Hospital and its PKRC (one each)

“This brings the number of recovered and discharged cases to 84,500 or 83.35 percent of the total number of cases in Sarawak. With this, there are still 16,188 active cases remaining in the state,” it added.

The committee also reported two deaths involving the elderly.

The first death recorded today (Aug 24) involved a 80-year-old local woman from Bintulu who was brought to Bintulu Hospital for treatment. She was tested positive on Aug 16 and had a history of high blood pressure and heart disease.

The second death was a 75-year-old local man from Kuching. He was admitted to SGH after he was tested positive on Aug 6. According to the SDMC, the case had a history of high blood pressure and dyslipidemia.

The committee also declared that Sarikei district turned orange from yellow after recording 22 local infection cases for the past two weeks.

“To date, the state has 24 red districts, six orange districts, seven yellow districts, and three green districts,” it added.
