KUCHING: Sarawak achieved a State Average Grade (GPN) of 5.07 in its Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2020 results, an improvement over its GPN of 5.18 for SPM 2019.

The State Education Department (JPNS) explained that the GPN is calculated based on the overall achievement of candidates and subjects, adding that a smaller number indicated better results.

“The total number of SPM candidates in Sarawak for the year 2020 was 32,426,” it said in a statement today (June 10).

The percentage of passing or qualifying for the SPM 2020 certificate in Sarawak was 87.83 percent, compared to 84.61 percent for SPM 2019 – an increment of 3.22 percent.

“The percentage of excellent SPM 2020 candidates in Sarawak was 1.89 percent, compared to 1.74 percent for SPM 2019. This is an increase of 0.15 percent,” the department said.

As for the gap in the percentage of candidates who achieved the certificate between urban and rural candidates, the department said the gap has narrowed from 2.82 percent in 2019 to 1.59 percent in last year’s SPM.
