Sarawak records increase in best STPM achievers

KUCHING: Sarawak has shown an increase of Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) 4.00 achievers compared to last year, after results were released yesterday.

State Education director Dr Azhar Ahmad revealed that about 96 candidates from national secondary schools achieved a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.00 (maxima) this year, compared to only 92 candidates in 2018.

“In addition, 1,913 candidates around the state achieved a CGPA of 3.00 and above,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

Overall, there were about 5,494 candidates who received their 2019 results compared to 5,191 in 2018. 

Out of the total candidates, 24 candidates fully graduated in five subjects, 3,741 candidates fully graduated in four subjects (4P), 945 candidates fully graduated in three subjects (3P), 485 candidates graduated fully in two subjects (2P) while 299 candidates graduated in one (1P).

However, there was a decrease in CGPA for the state’s STPM 2019 results – 2.66 compared to 2018’s 2.73.

Aside from that, there were 22 schools around the state with a CGPA above 2.80.

The top three schools were SMK Bako, Kuching (3.35), SMK Chung Hua, Sibu (3.31) and SMK Sacred Heart, Sibu (3.30).

A total of 5,837 candidates sat for the STPM in Sarawak in 2019 compared to 5,479 candidates in 2018.

Of these, 5,824 (99.78 per cent) were national secondary school candidates while 13 (0.22 per cent) were private candidates.

STPM is an open certification exam, in which a certificate will be given to candidates who have completed a full or part-time pass in at least one subject.
