Sarawak records increase in road accidents

MIRI: Miri Division has recorded an  increase of 39.07 per cent in road accidents – from 2,191  cases in 2021 to 3,047 in 2022 from January to November.

Sarawak Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the fatality rate also showed an increase  of  11.36 per cent from 44 deaths in 2021 to 49 in 2022.

“Overall, the state’s road accident statistics showed that accidents had surged from 12,706  cases in 2021 to 17,824 in 2022 from January to  November,  an increase of 40.30 per cent,” he disclosed on Monday (Dec 19) after launching the Sarawak Road Safety Campaign in conjunction with Christmas and Chinese New Year in Permyjaya here.

The fatality rate showed an increase  of  17.10 per cent from 299 deaths in 2021 to 350 in 2022,  “and  this is not a good sign for  Sarawak road users,” he pointed out.

“Accidents involving motorcars are the highest with  17,026 cases, followed by 4X4s with 5,016 cases up to November 2022,” he added.

The  campaign is an initiative by the Sarawak Road Safety Council under the Sarawak Ministry of Transport to provide road safety information, create road safety awareness, behavioural change in road users.

Also present were Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Norizan Jili , Miri deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Sabri Zainol and Miri JPJ chief Fifi Suhesty Hasmuni.
