Sarawak registers new record high 270 cases

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 270 Covid-19 positive cases today – a new daily record surpassing the previous 255 cases on Jan 24, bringing the state’s tally to 5,094 cases.

At the same time, the state also recorded two more Covid-19 related deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities so far to 44.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the latest cases comprised 79 from Sibu, Beluru (74), Bintulu (23), Miri (17), Sri Aman (15), Matu (12), Selangau (10), Julau (six), Kanowit and Lundu – five each, Bau and Kapit – four each, Dalat and Meradong – three each, Kuching, Sarikei, Song and Tatau – two each, while Sebauh and Lawas recorded one case each.

Super spreader Pasai Cluster accounted for more than a third of the cases at 96 spread over nine districts.

In Sibu district, the Pasai Cluster recorded 20 cases. Fifty-one other cases involved close contacts screened from active case detection (ACD), three were individuals with symptoms screened at health facilities, another three were individual screenings and two were medical workers at health facilities.

In Beluru, 55 cases involved the Pasai Cluster, 18 from ACD, and one case involved the Rakut Cluster.

In Bintulu, seven cases were from ACD, six involved the Pasai Cluster, five involved the Rakut Cluster and five others were individuals with symptoms.

“In Miri, 10 cases were individual screenings and seven from ACD,” Uggah said in a daily Covid-19 update press conference today.

All cases reported in Sri Aman, Selangau, Meradong, Song and Tatau districts were from ACD.

The cases in Matu district involved the Jalan Pengiran Cluster while all cases in Lundu and Sebauh were linked to Pasai Cluster, and the four cases in Bau were linked to Tabong Cluster.

In Julau, four cases involved medical workers, one from ACD and one was an individual with symptoms.

In Kanowit, four involved the Pasai Cluster and one was an individual with symptoms.

In Kapit, two cases involved the Pasai Cluster and two were medical workers.

In Dalat, two cases involved the Pasai Cluster and one was an individual screened in high risk area in the district.

In Kuching, one was an individual with symptoms while the other was a local Sarawakian returning from Kuala Lumpur.

In Sarikei, one case was from ACD and one involved the Pasai Cluster while the one case reported in Lawas was an individual with symptoms.

As of Thursday, there were 12 remaining Covid-19 clusters in Sarawak, namely the Bintang Daily Cluster in Meradong; Jalan Pengiran Cluster in Matu; Tabong Cluster in Bau; Indah Riang Cluster, Keranji Tabuan Cluster and Stutong Cluster in Kuching; Bedayan Cluster in Serian; Rakut Cluster, Jelita Cluster and Bah Sayap Cluster in Miri; Bukit Sekubong Cluster in Sebauh; and Pasai Cluster in Sibu.

Uggah also said 178 cases had recovered and been discharged from hospitals on Friday – 70 from Sibu Hospital, 42 from PKRC under Hospital Kapit, 30 from Miri Hospital, 15 from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), 12 from Bintulu Hospital and nine from Sarikei Hospital.

“This brings the total number of recovered and discharged cases to 3,257 or 63.94 percent of total Covid-19 cases in Sarawak,” he pointed out.

Also on Thursday, there were 1,762 individuals still undergoing treatment at hospital isolation wards in the state – 913 in Sibu Hospital, Miri Hospital (394), SGH (166), Bintulu Hospital (161), PKRC under Kapit Hospital (99), Sarikei Hospital (24), Limbang Hospital (four) and PKRC Sipitang in Sabah (one).

 “Today (Thursday), 358 new person-under-investigation (PUI) cases have been reported and 105 PUIs are still awaiting laboratory results,” Uggah added.
