MIRI: Sarawak is on the hunt for more athletes to represent the state in the upcoming Sukma 2024 sailing events.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Dr. Ripin Lamat, was calling on young talents, especially from Telang Usan, to step up. He encouraged those with a passion for sailing to engage with his ministry for training.

Dr. Ripin said this at the flag-off ceremony of the Telang Usan charity run at the Piasau Boat Club (PBC) yesterday.

In addition, the state’s sports teams in Sepak Takraw and women’s rugby are also seeking to increase their numbers.

“I was informed by Telang Usan assemblyman, Dennis Ngau, that the Penan from his constituency are very talented and have great potential in the sport of Sepak Takraw. I sincerely hope they will contact my ministry so we can arrange for some training sessions,” said Dr. Ripin.

Sarawak will be the host of SUKMA 2024. Of the 32 sports in the competition, five will take place in Miri, with sailing being one of them.

Meanwhile, the charity run successfully raised an impressive RM27,150. These funds will be directed towards the reconstruction of the 27-door Kampung Long Wat in Apoh Baram, which was sadly devastated by fire last July.

The event saw the participation of 280 individuals, including members from the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Telang Usan and the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP). The event kicked off at 4 pm. Dennis was also present.
