KUCHING: Sarawak is setting its sights on becoming the second-highest contributor to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) before the upcoming state election.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that while Kuala Lumpur leads, Sarawak aims to surpass Selangor, currently in second place.

“We have to be confident and organise a strategy so that our GDP is high, and I am confident that we will be able to surpass Selangor.

“Whether this is possible or not, it is up to us to organise our economic strategy, and this is what we are aiming for before the next state election,” he said.

He was speaking at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Supreme Council Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri programme here on Sunday night.

Abang Johari, who is the PBB president, reaffirmed the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government’s commitment to steering the state’s development in the right direction.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of grooming young leaders to uphold the party’s legacy and ensure sustainable progress.

This approach, he asserted, will adapt to evolving political and economic landscapes, fostering a dynamic environment for future leadership.

“We have to train the young generations to produce strong and relevant leaders in the future and avoid issues such as money politics.

“But so far, we have been able to manage our party well, and this can give space to the young people to lead in the future.

“The situation will always change, and the political landscape will also change with the economic sector being managed in a new way,” he said.

Also present were PBB deputy president Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, senior vice president Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, permanent chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, chief political secretary to the Premier, Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, among others.
