KUCHING: Sarawak is eyeing the opportunity to host the fourth National Journalists Day (Hawana) next year.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that Sarawak’s keen interest in hosting the prestigious event will be discussed with the organising committee to explore the possibility.

“We are aware of Sarawak’s aspiration to host Hawana in 2024. Let us engage in discussions with the organizing committee first, and if everything proceeds smoothly, we can invite Sarawak to submit their bid for hosting Hawana,” said Fahmi.

The minister said this during his visit to the Sarawak media booth at the mini carnival held in conjunction with Hawana 2023 yesterday.

In light of these developments, president of the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA), Ronnie Teo Teck Wei, expressed optimism about Kuching being selected as the host city for Hawana next year.

“Kuching possesses the capacity and potential to organise an event of this magnitude, considering its strong presence in the fare, incentive, convention, and exhibition (MICE) industry. Furthermore, the media fraternity in Kuching has consistently demonstrated their support in fostering connections with media communities nationwide,” said Teo.

He further added, “We eagerly anticipate the application and bidding process in the future.”

To date, the previous editions of Hawana were held in Kuala Lumpur in 2018, followed by Melaka last year and Perak this year.
