KUCHING: A meeting with all sports associations in Sarawak will be held soon to address the effects of the withdrawal of several state athletes from the Malaysia Games (Sukma) contingent.

“I am not sure whether or not the athletes (who withdrew) were those capable of winning medals.

“Nonetheless, we have plans…the backup athletes can fill in the gaps,” he said at the Sarawak Sports Council (SSC) appreciation dinner here on Sunday (Jan 23).

Commenting on the preparations for Sukma, he stated that aside from the withdrawals, the Covid-19 pandemic had also hindered training.

“The lockdown was unavoidable. We have to accept this. If our state is affected, other states are also affected.

“However, as Sarawak has entered Phase 4 of the National Recovery Plan, I hope we can reboot and pick up from where we left off two years ago.

“Having said this, sports development officers will ensure that within this short period, we will be able to elevate the athletes to the level we hope for.”
