KUCHING: Sarawak is taking steps to appoint more para sports specialists who will be able to identify para athletes with different abilities and matching them with the type of sports events that are suitable for them.

Minister of Welfare, Community Well-being, Women, Family and Child Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the role of these specialists was crucial in ensuring the para athletes would qualify for the events they are taking part in.

“So far, eight medical officers (involved in preparing Sarawak’s para athletes) have been sent to attend a course on determining the para athletes’ qualification in Selangor in February. Prior to that, 12 more officers were sent to attend a similar course in Putrajaya,” she told reporters after watching a training session for the para bowlers in Batu Kawa here yesterday.

She said that two of the officers had obtained international-level qualification and would help prepare the state’s para athletes for the various upcoming sports meets.

According to her, a total of 164 para athletes would compete in 10 events at the Para Malaysia Games (Sukma) and four events at the Malaysia Deaf Games (Sopma) to be held in Johor next year. – Bernama
