KUCHING: The AsiaFlux Conference 2022 which is scheduled to take place on Sept 22-23 here is expected to draw 500 delegates from more than 20 countries.

Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI) director Dr Lulie Melling said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the event during the Peat Gala Nite on Sept 20.

“It’s a great honour for Sarawak to be chosen as this is the first time AsiaFlux is being held in Sarawak.

“This is a very high-level science meeting,” she said in a statement on today (Aug 8).

Apart from the conference itself, she said a free training course from Sept 18 to 19 will also be organised.

“The training course will be focusing on the theory of greenhouse gas flux measurement and the application of tools for conducting eddy flux measurements, including data analysis and processing,” she said.

“In addition, participants will also have the opportunity to experience a Tropical Peat Swamp Forest in the Maludam National Parks, which includes the Eddy-Covariance Flux Tower site in our post-event excursion programme on Sept 22 to 23,” she said.

She said AsiaFlux 2022 is a prestigious event organised with a motivation to provide opportunities for the delegates to present their most recent research activities, exchange new ideas and experiences, establish research relations and explore possibilities of collaborative research.

“With the conference theme ‘The Nexus of Land Use Change, Ecosystems & Climate: A Path towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ we intend to make this conference the platform to raise awareness to the government, the industries and the people especially potential young scientists from Southeast Asia such as Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam on the importance of greenhouse gases (GHGs) cycling in guiding sustainable land use policies in the region.

“Together with several invited talks from internationally renowned scientists, training course, young scientist meeting and tropical peat excursion, AsiaFlux 2022 will offer a rich, stimulating and enthralling programme,” she said.

The AsiaFlux Conference 2022 is jointly organised by TROPI, Malaysian Peat Society (MPS), and AsiaFlux Science Steering Committee, in collaboration with National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan; Hokkaido University, Japan; Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB); Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM); and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI).
