BINTULU: The Sarawak government is planning to set up a hydrogen plant in Kidurong here.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the proposed hydrogen plant would be implemented once the state’s methanol project was completed.

“My visit here today (Mar 22) to the Petrochemical Hub area is to look at the planning as we have received several suggestions from investors who want to set up their operations in Kidurong.

“We already have investors from the United States developing their medical hub which produces medical supplies. Now the company is investing RM200 million in the first phase of the project.

“After that, they will carry out the second phase where the investment is about RM800 million.

“And we have another plan, whereby the hydrogen plant will also be developed in the same area next year,” he said in a press conference after a visit to the Tanjung Kidurong Petrochemical Hub yesterday.

The Premier further said there were also plans to develop houses for employees and roads to provide convenience to the people.

“With that, I can see that with our planning for the industries that will be here, and I believe that eventually the number of employees will be about 15,000,” he said.

He hoped to see all the development in place and after the methanol and hydrogen plants were developed, another oil company was planning to set up its plant as well.

“With all that, it means that contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will be at least six to seven percent by 2030.

“This is because all these proposed plans are carried out until 2027, and after the year 2027, there are also plans for another petrochemical (industry) to come in,” said Abang Johari.
