KUCHING: The Sarawak government and Brunei Darussalam will be working together to further develop tourism and agriculture.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed this after receiving a courtesy call from Brunei Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Datuk Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Datuk Paduka Mohammad Yusof during the closing of the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (Idecs) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday.
“He has conveyed a message from the Sultan of Brunei that it is good for Sarawak and Brunei to collaborate in this whole economic development. We will work together in the areas of tourism and agriculture,” he said when met by reporters.
On the development of agriculture, Abang Johari said there was a special committee task force formed by Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Brunei.
“They will work together to establish a common agricultural area between Kuala Lawas, Merapok and Brunei.
“The collaboration is ongoing… And we have Sacofa Sdn Bhd and Datastream Technology Sdn. Bhd (DST) of Brunei to work together in the areas of network connectivity as well.
“Both will explore the possibility of using a gateway in Brunei to link with our fibre optics,” he said.
Earlier, the chief minister also witnessed the signing of a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) between Sacofa and DST to provide Internet broadband services in Sarawak.
Representing Sacofa during the exchange of JVA document was Sacofa managing director Mohamed Zaid Zaini, witnessed by its deputy chairman Datuk Syed Ahmad Alwee Alsreen, while representing DTS was its acting ceo Radin Sufri Radin Basiuni, witnessed by its group corporate counsel Muhammad Zaki Wahab.
