SIBU: The Sarawak Government has been called to consider venturing into producing its own coffee bean brand as a potential economic opportunity.

In urging this, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said a total of 2.25 million cups of coffee are consumed daily worldwide.

Chieng delivers his speech.

“Through the statistics, we can see how huge the market is, and 90 percent of them are from developed countries, with Malaysia gradually catching up with the trend,” he said in his speech at the Microwave event at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Methodist here yesterday (April 27).

Chieng added modern technology can be utilised for coffee bean farming to produce high-quality beans.

“For the agricultural side, we must continue to promote this coffee farming so that we will be able to create our very own Sarawakian brand of coffee bean,” he added.

Regarding the Microwave programme, Chieng noted that it was the last one to be held in the series.

He also expressed hope that the programme had inspired the youth and urged for more similar events to be organised in Sarawak.

“It is very important for associations from the commercial side, schools, politicians and others to continue working together to form a better platform for our youth,” he stressed.

The Microwave event organised by the Sibu Film Art Association showcased art exhibitions, workshops, talks, stage performances and an artisan market from 44 vendors.

Also present was the event’s organising chairman Christopher Ling.
