KUCHING: The Sarawak Forestry Department is collaborating with Van Hall Larenstein (VHL), University of Applied Sciences, from the Netherlands, on forest conservation and reforestation efforts.

During a recent courtesy call on director Datuk Hamden Mohammad, Dr Peter van der Meer from VHL expressed his intention to work with the Sarawak government on carbon-related initiatives.

The department said the initiative is a move that could potentially have significant positive impacts on the environment and the economy of Sarawak.

“The collaboration aims to convert palm plantations into high-value tree species and promote Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) practices.

“Collaboration between Sarawak Forestry and foreign institutions of higher learning is not new, but the partnership with VHL, University of Applied Sciences could give a positive boost to forest management and environmental conservation efforts in Sarawak, and potentially serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges,” the department said in a statement.

Also present were deputy director of Forestry (Forest Management) Jack Liam, Dr Malcom Demies and Mohamad Hidayatullah Mohamad, both from the Planning and Management Division (Carbon Unit).
