KUCHING: Sarawak cardiologist Dr Alan Fong has been elected as the chairman of the American College of Cardiology.

In congratulating Dr Fong, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the appointment was an honour for Sarawak’s medical faculty because the selection was made by more than 50,000 professionals from all over the world.

“Dr Fong, a senior cardiologist at the Sarawak Heart Centre, head of the Sarawak Clinical Research Centre of the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and president of the National Heart Association of Malaysia, was elected to chair the American College of Cardiology which has a membership of more than 50,000 worldwide.

“I am very proud that he has been chosen by professional peers to hold the position of chairman for one year.

“This also shows that Sarawakians can be recognised internationally even if they develop their careers right here in Sarawak,” he said in a Facebook post.

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, added Dr Fong’s achievement was a continuation of what was initiated back in 2009.

“In that year, Malaysia was selected for the first International Chapter of the American College of Cardiology after the leadership visited our Sarawak Heart Centre in Kuching and was amazed by its high standards and the work that we do.

“This means that if all of us work together, Sarawakians can be as talented and as good as any specialists anywhere else in the world,” he said.
