KUCHING: Sarawakians have been advised to be prudent in their daily spendings by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister Chong Chieng Jen.
“As consumers, we must make plans and always be prudent in our spending so that we will not be overwhelmed by financial problems later.
“We are all consumers including traders and we are entitled to know our rights and responsibilities as consumers,” he said when officiating at a Consumer Expo at Vivacity Megamall. The expo began on Feb 14 and ends today.
Thirty-four agencies, comprising government and statutory agencies, are taking part in the expo organised by Sarawak Consumer Voice Association (Covas).
They include Chong’s ministry, Bank Negara Malaysia, Counselling and Credit Management Agency, Department of Insolvency Malaysia, Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), Malaysian Cooperative Commission, Malaysia Information Department (Japen), Malaysian Royal Customs Department, Public Complaints Bureau, Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa) and Covas.
Chong further pointed out that the expo was a platform for consumers, especially Sarawakians, to know more about the various functions of the government in relations to consumer rights.
Apart from exhibitions, various service counters are also provided.
At the event, Chong presented cheques totalling RM21,000 to seven associations — Kuching Autism Association, Grace Centre, Kuching Red Crescent Society, Kuching Disabled Association (House of Joy), Sarawak Children Cancer Society, Sarawak Society for the Deaf and Kuching Hope Welfare Association.
