KUCHING: The announcement of the Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance Package (BKSS) 6.0 by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg last Friday received positive feedback from the general public.

The assistance package worth RM1.4 billion will provide cash assistance to the B40 group, frontliners, hawkers, petty traders and others affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Apart from that, the package also introduced discounts on electricity and water bills, assessment rates and rentals to those who are eligible.

Following this, New Sarawak Tribune spoke to members of the public to get their views regarding the subject matter.

The public were generally satisfied with the assistance package, especially with the current implementation of the movement control order (MCO), which will affect the lives of many.

They are confident that the assistance will help Sarawakians to purchase essential items, as well as contribute to their savings for rainy days.

However, it was also found that some are worried that those facing financial difficulties would have to wait a while for the assistance to be distributed.

I am really grateful and happy to hear that there will be assistance for the people. This really shows the government’s compassion and understanding towards the current difficult situation. It really means a lot to those who face financial problems as they have lost their source of income.

The Sarawak government is always thinking of the best measures in implementing initiatives to help ease the burden of the people, which is good. However, do not take anything for granted and follow the guidelines that have been provided. We as people need to play our part to stop the pandemic.

It is nice that Sarawakians will get the assistant package. However, the packages will be distributed in a few months. As a single person, I can wait for the one-off assistance, but I cannot help but feel worried about others who are affected by the MCO. I hope they will give it out sooner.

I am happy to see the state government stepping in to help the people. Many sectors are affected by the pandemic and have not fully recovered. The assistant package will ease the people’s burdens, especially for families and those who are single. Let’s just hope that this MCO will reduce the number of cases.

The assistance package is timely as it reassures citizens during this time of uncertainty. Not only can the money be used to buy essential items, it can also be kept as savings. With assurance, citizens would be aspired to do their best to adapt to the current situation. Together, we can do this.

BKSS 6.0 is a great relief aid especially for hawkers and roadside vendors who live hand-to-mouth and also for those laid off from work due to the pandemic. At least this package will lessen their financial burden.
