KUCHING: This year has been a long and challenging period because of the Covid-19 pandemic which has brought major economic destruction and despair to the whole world.

In Malaysia, for Dec 28 alone, 1,594 Covid-19 cases were reported, bringing the total tally of confirmed cases to 106,690.

Before bidding farewell to this year, New Sarawak Tribune recently asked some Sarawakians about their hopes for the coming year.

Samion Gani

SAMION GANI (Penghulu, Miri)

I hope that Covid-19 pandemic will end soon. I am happy the state and federal governments are going to roll out the distribution of the vaccines which will signal that we are gaining control.

Michelle Choo Lee Nyuk

MICHELLE CHOO LEE NYUK (Private worker, Miri)

I hope the public continues to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) by practising social distancing.  I hope they will discard used face masks properly. I also hope the Covid-19 pandemic can be overcome soon so that life will return to normal for everyone.

Hadiah Suhaili

HADIAH SUHAIL (Caterer, Kuching)

Business has been poor although businesses are allowed to resume operations. I’m only a small businesswoman who provides food service catering. During the lockdown, many of my customers, especially couples, had to postpone and cancel their weddings. When they cancelled events last minute, I faced big losses because I had already bought the ingredients for the dishes. I hope the Covid-19 pandemic will end soon.   I am ready for the vaccinations.

Nor Ali

NOR ALI (Penambang operator (river taxi operator), Kuching)

If I don’t go out, there is nothing on the table for my family. Previously, I could make at least RM70 a day and sometimes I earned about RM100 per day, especially during the peak season when tourists flooded the city. But now with no passenger, I have no income. I hope 2021 will be a good year for everyone.

Kang Boon Eong

KANG BOON EONG (Businessman & Kapitan, Mukah)

2021 is the Year of the Cow. I hope the Covid-19 pandemic will end soon so that the lives of the people will be joyful and peaceful worldwide. I hope everyone will be healthy, happy, loving and united in Sarawak.

Wee Hui Zheng

WEE HUI ZHENG (Life insurance agent, Mukah)

Covid-19 has changed the world. We are living in a new normal. I hope everyone could take care of themselves and together we grow and progress for the better.

Mohd Baharuddin Mohamad
