KUCHING: Sarawak’s shining example of cultural unity and political stability allows for the formulation of forward-thinking policies to flourish, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to him, the state’s unique cultural environment has enabled all ethnic groups to maintain a tradition of unity and harmony for a long time, resulting in political stability in the state.

“Thus, our stable governments can focus on formulating fair and enlightened policies, including setting up funds for the development of various religious beliefs under the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR).

“We are also able to focus on allocating funds to support schools of various origins, cultivate human resources, keep up with the cutting-edge trends of technology and modern science, actively promote the digital economy, update green industries, explore sustainable new green energy, modernise our agriculture sector, and establish the Sarawak Sovereign Fund to accumulate wealth and resources for future generations,” he said at the Teokhiaw Club’s 102nd anniversary celebration and Sarawak’s 60th anniversary dinner at Lok Thian Restaurant here last night (Aug 19).

His speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He added that the policies were for the benefit of the people, as evidenced by the fruitful results of Sarawak’s independence for 60 years. It is also an excellent display for the world of Sarawak’s success and pride.

Elaborating, he said that the Teokhiaw Club, a venerable historical organisation, has played an integral role in Sarawak’s journey and has borne witness to shifts in governance, economic evolution, and social change.

The club’s emphasis on education and trade has significantly contributed to the state’s development and social fabric through their commitment to humanitarian efforts, temple establishment, and educational units, which underscores their dedication to building a better society.

At the event, teachers and students from the China Hanshan Normal University collaborated with the Teokhiaw Club Orchestra, signifying a commitment to cultural exchange and growth and also strengthening ties between Sarawak and China.
