BETONG: Efforts to establish Saribas Agro Park can begin once a road leading to it has been completed, said Saribas assemblyman Mohammad Razi Sitam.

According to him, the Suri-Tuie road is currently being built at a cost of RM42 million provided by the state government as announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg in April last year.

“The road will be completed in 2012. Work on the first kilometre is underway after the landowners have been compensated,” he said after opening a one-stop committee (OSC) dialogue here, yesterday.

He pointed out that once the road has been completed, land alongside it could be developed for agriculture and other
purposes.

“This is one of the strategies to develop the agro park in line to the vision of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to turn Betong into one of the state’s food baskets,” he said.

When asked about the 2020 State Budget, Razi hoped the government was still focusing on the development of basic infrastructure especially in rural areas.

“For me, this is important to counter the impact of the 2020 National Budget which is not so kind to Sarawak. But efforts to improve Sarawak’s economy will continue.

“For Saribas, I look forward to new projects especially in Debak area where we have previously applied for the construction of a hawker centre, sports complex and others,” he said.

Also present at the event was Betong District Officer (who is also Betong OSC chairman) Sofhi Jebal.
