DATUK Ibrahim Baki has commended Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s visionary leadership in recalibrating Sarawak’s economy and aligning it with global trends.

The Satok assemblyman highlighted the recent achievements in algae production and the development of the green industry, which signified significant milestones in Sarawak’s technological advancement and its potential to revolutionise the economy.

Ibrahim stressed the need to create an enabling environment for Sarawakians affected by overseas layoffs to return and contribute to the state. He highlighted the importance of strengthening the workforce to ensure agility in a changing environment.

“This also means that overt spending on matters of infrastructure development, including research, must be maintained to stimulate the economy and foster its growth, including in emerging sectors and renewable sectors such as green technology,” he said when debating on the motion of appreciation for the TYT’s address at the DUN sitting on Friday (May  19).

Acknowledging the global economic challenges and the prevalence of layoffs in various industries, Ibrahim emphasised the significance of maintaining employment opportunities in key economic sectors such as technology, finance, media, and manufacturing.

“While Malaysia’s unemployment rate has improved to a three-year low of 3.5 per cent in February 2023,” he cautioned against complacency and pointed out the need to sustain employment opportunities to maintain a stable recovery in the labour market.
