KUCHING: Batch Three of the SayD’Signers programme are now undergoing their second year of training in furniture design at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Bandung, Indonesia.

Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) recruited six fresh graduates from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) for the batch.

In a statement, STIDC said the graduates had gone for industrial attachment for one year with local furniture factories, Samling Housing Products Sdn Bhd, Shin Yang Laminated Sdn Bhd, Brown Furniture Sdn  Bhd and Giovanni Wood Industries Sdn Bhd.

“They were guided and taught by a creative consultant engaged by STIDC during their one-year training and thus they have produced products during their training with the companies.”

One of the graduates, Brian Jong Khin Kee, produced an armchair called Ulin made from belian (hardwood) and the chair represented finesse, daintiness, passion, craftsmanship, beauty and eclecticism.

Yemeni Ayu Rosita produced an armchair called Lifva, with a semicircle armrest and slightly pointed downward, giving the design a unique look.

The Apungan dining set designed by Muhammad Awis Qarni was inspired by eclectic design and minimalism and made from acacia wood.

He noted that the Apungan wording originated from floating concept that brought unique value in design where it is packaged in a flat pack targeted for urban areas.

Awing Uloi produced a dining set called Peji made of acacia wood. The word Peji is derived from the Kayan language meaning together in reference to when people always gather together whenever they eat.

She added that her design brought fresh confidence to dining design where the objective was to create the standard for modern dining design, simple and affordable.
