KUCHING: The implementation of furniture design training at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) for the participants of the Sarawak Young Designers Programme (SayD’SignersSarawak) proves the Sarawak government’s commitment in helping young people develop their talents, especially in the field of furniture design.

According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Raden Sigit Witjaksono said the programme allowed Sarawak’s young designers to undergo training at ITB’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Design where they are given guidance to improve their skills as well as gain new knowledge.

He explained that the effort would lead to adding value to timber industry products in Sarawak.

Witjaksono said this at the closing ceremony of the STIDC-Saradec and FSRD ITB Furniture Design Training Programme as well as the Presentation of Training Completion Certificates to 26 SayD’SignersSarawak participants from the second, third and fourth groups at Pullman Hotel, Bandung, Indonesia recently.

The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who represented the Premier.

Witjaksono said the furniture design training programme at ITB was implemented as a result of the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) involving a collaboration between Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and ITB since 2018.

“It was followed by the first group of SayD’SignersSarawak participants at ITB early 2019. Training has been carried out for four years with the fourth group of SayD’SignersSarawak currently being trained from January to December 2022.

“We were also informed that for the fifth batch in 2023, Saradec Management has prepared six young designers from Sarawak to undergo training.

“This is in line with the vision and mission of the Sarawak government to produce 100 trained young designers by 2030.”
