SIBU: A total of 38 students from the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) was awarded the Toh Li Hua scholarship here yesterday.

UCTS’ deputy vice chancellor Associate Professor Dr Azlan Ali said that these students were the seventh batch to be awarded the scholarship under the Toh Li Hua Foundation (TLHF).

“There are 10 students who have been selected to receive the scholarship whereby five of them are doing their Foundation studies while the other five are doing their Undergraduate studies,” added Azlan prior to the award presentation at UCTS’ premises here.

Present to hand over the scholarship awards was Hock Peng Organisation deputy managing director Pemanca Datuk Dr Francis Toh Chiew Peng, who is also a director of TLHF.

Thus far, 64 students have been awarded the scholarship since it was introduced in the year 2016 by TLHF.

All the applicants were assessed on their academic achievements and financial needs by the TLHF Board of Trustees with Datuk Toh Chiew Jock as the chairman.

He said the purpose was to provide scholarships to needy students of Sarawak to pursue their tertiary education, particularly at UCTS, and to support financially needy students in reducing their financial burden during their studies.

The sponsorship is open to all eligible UCTS students of Sarawak regardless of their racial, cultural and religious background.

To be eligible for the sponsorship, students should obtain good results and maintain a CGPA of 2.5 and above in every semester.

Besides, the family income should not exceed RM3,000 per month and need to achieve UCTS Silver Leadership Awards (LEAd) for undergraduate only.

LEAd is a system of awarding points to students for their involvement in non-academic activities. It is introduced to encourage them to play active roles in co-curricular activities as the knowledge of experience gained are crucial for students when they leave UCTS.
