MIRI: The school library of SK South Miri has been upgraded with new facilities by OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad and Lions Club of Batu Niah.

This is part of efforts to promote reading culture among the school’s 479 students.

Through a RM20,000 contribution, the Bank has equipped the school with five book racks, two computers, four new air-conditioning units as well as protective supplies to help them keep safe since classes resumed recently.

The protective supplies included hand soaps, antiseptic wipes and children’s protective masks in order to make sure that they maintain the highest standard of hygiene during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Lions Club of Batu Niah president Alice Yong pointed out that the collaboration with OCBC Bank came quite naturally as both entities have teamed up on community efforts in Miri for several years now.

“We are grateful to the bank’s team (OCBC) through their Miri branch for their relentless support and commitment to assist the community.

“This year we want to promote the reading habit among students and need support to upgrade the school library and provide educational aid to SK South Miri based on the theme ‘Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader’,” she said.

Those new facilities are hoped to be able to ignite the students’ spirit and further steer their yearning for reading in order for them to ultimately become even more knowledgeable, she stressed.

The bank continues to strive to be more involved in the localities in which it operates and to become even more engaged in the community, going beyond simply providing superior banking products and services to meeting the social needs of the people as well, OCBC Bank Miri branch senior manager Benedict Ku noted on behalf of the branch.

“OCBC Bank has always strived to assist communities and we have been deeply involved in promoting education for children.

“We are pleased to have embarked on this special journey to nurture the reading habit among the students of SK South Miri. We trust that it will benefit them for many years to come,” he said.
