BANTEN (Indonesia): School supplies and prayer garments are among essential items to be purchased by the Global Peace Mission (GPM) volunteers for donation to the Sunda Straits tsunami victims.

The items including women’s undergarments acquired from the Pasar Rau here will be distributed to residents in Sumur and Labuan, two districts affected by the tsunami on Dec 22.

The GPM volunteers left for the humanitarian mission in Indonesia on Saturday.

GPM mission chief Shahrir Azfar Saleh said the school supplies would be distributed to 108 primary school children.

“In addition, we will also be buying shoes, stationery sets and toiletries. I was told that they lack these basic necessities,” he told Bernama when met at Pasar Rau here.

He said the goods would be distributed to the two districts today (Monday).

“The situation in both districts has been reported safe for us to visit,” he added.

The humanitarian mission is expected to continue until Jan 24 and those wishing to donate may channel their donations via www.billplz.com/peduliselatsunda or deposit the funds into Global Peace Mission Bank at Maybank Islamic account (5642-2161-1602); Bank Islam (1402-30100-29224); and Affin Islamic Bank (1051-9000-2871).

This time around five people have joined the mission. Apart from two GPM representatives, three others are Bernama journalist Muhammad Afiq Mohd Asri, Bernama News Channel journalist Siti Zanariah Nor Zin and cameraman Mohammad Hafiz Ahmad Kamal.

The tsunami that struck the Sunda Straits on Dec 22 was triggered by an underground landslide caused by the volcanic eruption on Anak Krakatoa and was followed by tidal waves.

According to the Indonesian National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) over 400 victims were reportedly killed while 30,000 were left homeless. – Bernama
