School team wins world championship

KUCHING: SMK Jalan Arang here sent two teams to participate in the MakeX Robotics World Championship 2019 in Guangzhou, China from November 28 to December 1.

Sarawak Blue Team, represented by Joel Kwoh Lik Xun and Hii Tuong Jing, emerged champion in the MakeX Starter: City Guardian category.

It managed to complete the mission with a full score and the fastest time of 2 minutes and 54 seconds.

The team represented Malaysia in the MakeX World Championship 2018 in Nansha, China under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research — qualifying for the finals and was placed 9th overall.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Red Team which consisted of Felix Thian Zhi Xiang and Declan Hadrian Sem managed to compete in the qualifying rounds.

The MakeX competition aims to introduce and strengthen science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education among youths.

This year, MakeX was introduced to 150 cities from over 30 countries and saw participation from 10,000 teams.

SMK Jalan Arang principal Fong Yut Kuen was proud of the success of the teams from the school, an excellent achievement to add to the collection of awards gained by the school’s Robotics Club as well as being the pride of the school, state, and country.

She commended the Robotics Club advisor, Wong Hee Ting, who is a mentor for the school team.
