MIRI: The repair and upgrading works on Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sayed Othman here is expected to be completed by March next year.

Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said works on the project costing RM7.947 million began in September last year.

“This is a hybrid project with a combination of Industrialised Building System (IBS) components and conventional in-situ at the school.

“The new look consists of two blocks of four-storey buildings. One of the blocks will have nine classrooms while the other is for the school’s administration purposes.

“The new building will be able to accommodate over 400 students compared to only about 100 students at present,” he said during his visit to the school today.

The school was first constructed in 1959 on a 1.21 hectare site.

The school’s dilapidated state caught nationwide attention in 2016 after an incident went viral on social media involving a seven-year-old pupil who sustained minor injuries after stepping on a run-down floorboard in her class.

Ting also visited SK Anchi today to monitor the ongoing refurbishing works at the school.

“The RM6.546 million project is progressing ahead of schedule with a record of 35 percent completion.

“The project commenced in June last year and was scheduled to complete in December this year.

“However, the contractor told me that they will try to complete the project by July this year – five months ahead of schedule,” he said.

The school currently has over 900 students comprising 842 Primary One to Six students, 75 pre-school pupils and 62 Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI) students.
