KOTA SAMARAHAN: The establishment of the Science Data Centre at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak will help realise the state government’s digital transformation which is one of the main enablers outlined in the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“The centre is also able to assist the Sarawak government to analyse data and build the knowledge needed in addressing any issue or problem,” said UNIMAS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.

“Systematic analytical data management also allows in making important decisions based on scientific findings and analysis,” he said.

He was speaking during the second day of the UNIMAS convocation ceremony at Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (DeTAR Putra) on Tuesday (June 28).

Dr Kadim added that the establishment of the centre also coincides with current needs, especially involving the interests of society and the state.

“Apart from being able to translate the much received data in the form of research results, this centre is one of the important requirements in efforts to improve services and delivery to the people.

“At the same time, expertise in analytical data is also able to produce innovative and high-impact new findings as well as provide immediate solutions to problems faced by citizens of the world today,” he pointed out.

In this regard, the people in UNIMAS also need to always think outside the box to face the challenges in education post COVID-19.

“This is important to ensure that every challenge faced can be turned into a golden opportunity to increase the capacity and potential of the university to become a centre of excellence in the region,” said Dr Kadim.

“The challenges faced in education during this post COVID-19 is real and require academics and students to adapt to new norms of life.

“Therefore, skills in the use of digital technology as well as online teaching applications are required.

“The ability of teachers and students to improve their mastery of the use of ICT in the teaching and learning process clearly shows their readiness in facing this challenge,” he added.
