KUCHING: The agility with which the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) implemented the Covid-19 immunisation programme in the state reflects the committee’s earnest determination to eradicate infections in Sarawak.

Commending SDMC’s achievement, Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman noted that 8,323 individuals thus far had received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in Sarawak.

“The target of vaccinating 70 per cent of the Sarawak people up until August this year is practical to reduce the strain on hospitals and medical centres in the state, which are insufficient,” he said on Tuesday (March 2) when commenting on the immunisation programme.

On the state government’s consideration of purchasing its own vaccines to increase supply, he described the steps as proactive.

“This is a contingency plan to complement the existing supply from the federal government. I believe SDMC will seek advice on this matter from the Sarawak Covid-19 Vaccine Advisory Group (Scovag) led by former State Health Department director Prof Datuk Dr Andrew Kiyu Dawie.”

At the same time, Fazzrudin, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu deputy Youth chief, advised Sarawakians to continue to observe standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“Even with the immunisation programme being implemented in Sarawak, the community should not be complacent in SOP compliance.

“Instead, the new norm should be practised until the situation is truly safe.”

Earlier, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said that 8,323 individuals had been vaccinated in Sarawak within three days, starting last Friday.

In his Facebook post, he said these persons were from nine divisions in the state and this was only achieved with the cooperation of Sarawakians.
