KUCHING: The final decision on the operations of private kindergartens and childcare centres in the state lays with the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), says Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

Having said that, the Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister pointed out that a decision would be made in the next meeting.

She said this when asked whether Sarawak would follow Putrajaya’s decision to have private kindergartens and childcare centres remain closed until June 6.

“We have to look and take into consideration the number of Covid-19 positive cases then compare it to the rate of infection within our population.

“The National Security Council has decided to take such actions in order to break the chain of transmission because we do need drastic action to be taken.”

Fatimah added that SDMC would make the necessary decision and directives to be followed.

She also urged the public to continue complying with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) especially with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

“We must comply with the SOPs including on Hari Raya prayers, inter-district movement and visiting. The celebration must be in moderation because the number of cases would increase if we are complacent.”

The Ministry of Education recently announced that all private kindergartens and childcare centres would remain closed until June 6 effective Monday (May 10).
