KUCHING: Sarawak’s proposal to host the upcoming 34th South East Asia (SEA) Games will be benefit – especially in terms of economy – for the state.
Economist Geoffrey Williams said it represents Sarawak’s goals to enhance its reputation as a developing region.
“It ties in with major local initiatives like Sarawak Airlines, their state-owned bank, and Sarawak’s sovereign wealth future fund,” he was quoted as saying by the FMT news portal.
Geoffrey added that Sarawak is looking to present itself as an appealing investment destination by showing it is capable of funding the prestigious international sporting event.
On another note, economist Ahamed Kameel Mydin Meera also supported the venture, stating that it is capable of bringing numerous benefits to Sarawak.
However, he also warned that the Games’ economic success relies on Sarawak’s ability to manage costs over time.
Ahamed said that with proper organisation, the games could bring financial benefits to Sarawak.
“Improved sports facilities and infrastructure will also boost future tourism and benefit locals long after the Games have ended,” he said.
Recently, Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah expressed to the federal government Sarawak’s interest in hosting the 34th SEA Games in 2027, either on its own or as a co-host.
He said hosting the Games was well within Sarawak’s capabilities, citing the availability of suitable facilities to accommodate the large-scale event.
