SIBU: A search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched for an elderly man who was reported missing after failing to return from a fishing trip at Sungai Maaw, Paradom on Saturday (Feb 5).

The victim identified as Sia Yii Jeng, 63, is said to have gone out fishing around 8am with a fishing net.

Fearing that the victim has yet to come home at nightfall, his 53-year-old wife lodged a police report at Lanang police station at 8.30pm.

According to the report, the victim promised his wife that he would be back by 12.30pm as he had to send their children to the airport.

However, he did not return home by the promised time and it prompted his wife to go to the site to look for him at 4pm. She only found her husband’s car parked at Nan Chong jetty.

Following that, a SAR operation involving Sibu Central firemen, Lanang police, Sibu Marine Police and Sibu Civil Defence Force (APM), was launched at 9am on Sunday (Feb 6).
