BINTULU: A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been activated to locate a car that was believed to have plunged into Kemena River from the Sebauh Public Works Department (JKR) Wharf here on Monday.

Bintulu fire chief TPgB Christus Buson said a distress call on the incident was received around 8pm.

According to witnesses, it is likely that the victim was still in the car. However, it could not be ascertained how many victims were involved and what type of vehicle it was.

A decision was made that night to locate the car using ‘grappling iron’ deployed from some villagers’ boats.

“The location of the vehicle has been identified at about 150 feet from the bank of the wharf and has been marked with a buoy.

“A control post has been set up at the wharf for our men to be on standby. Surface monitoring at the location has also been carried out,” he said.
