Second highest daily – 749 cases

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded its second highest daily positive Covid-19 cases at 749 on Saturday (May 22), bringing the state’s tally to 41,620 cases.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said 446 of the new cases, or 59.55 percent, were detected in the districts of Kuching, Sibu, Miri, and Mukah.

Kuching accounted for 149 of the new casaes, Sibu (125), Miri (93), Mukah (79), Kanowit (49), Bintulu (48), Belaga (37), Sri Aman (24), Samarahan (21), Kapit (20), Selangau (16), Serian (11), Betong (11), Sebauh, Pakan and Subis each recorded 10 cases, Tatau (seven), Beluru and Asajaya (five each), three cases each in Bau and Pusa, Bukit Mabong, Saratok, Julau and Daro recorded two cases each while Sarikei, Dalat, Lundu, Song and Meradong each registered one case.

“The high number of cases in Kuching District comprise of cases detected to have contact with previous positive cases (over 95 percent), most of whom are family members involved in movement during Hari Raya,” SDMC said.

The committee said 80 of the 749 new cases reported on Saturday had shown signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection during screening.

“Six hundred 15 were individuals who had been given quarantine orders.

“The new cases consist of 573 people who had contact with positive Covid-19 cases, 74 from other screenings at health facilities, 60 from symptomatic individual screenings at health facilities, 41 individuals from existing active  clusters, and one person who had returned from another state in Malaysia (Import B),” said SDMC.

It also reported 769 patients had recovered and discharged from hospitals in the state on Saturday.

This brings the number of recovered and discharged cases thus far to 34,791, or 83.59 percent of the total number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, 6,487 active cases are still being isolated and treated at hospital wards and PKRCs throughout the state.
