KUCHING: The second phase of the Pan Borneo Highway construction works is expected to be carried out by next year.
Works Minister Baru Bian said, the implementation of the second phase can only be done once the allocation is granted by the Finance Ministry.
Baru disclosed the matter during the open house of Deputy Minister for Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen held at Chung Hua No 3 hall on Tuesday.
He also said that he is convinced that the construction of the first phase of the Pan Borneo Highway is expected to be completed on schedule.
“I advised contractors to abide with the time frame given in completing the construction works and thus saving on costs.
“However, we will not compromise on security issues, whereby a special committee was deployed to the field last week acting on complaints received,” he explained.
So far, the first work package of Pan Borneo Highway under the first phase of Telok Melano to Sematan has been completed and opened to the public from Jan 26.
The opening of the new 32.77-kilometre route at a cost of RM580 million was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg together with Baru.
