KUCHING: The term ‘old people’ does not apply to the security guard profession, says Malaysian Security Industry Association (PIKM) Sarawak chairman Shaharuddin Samsi.
The managing director of Muhafiz Security Sdn Bhd said what was important in recruiting a security personnel were good health and passing the security screening by authorities.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) through the Private Agency Circular No. 4 of 2010 regarding the conditions for the appointment of security guards, the maximum age is 65.
“Those aged 56 to 65 must obtain confirmation from the medical officer regarding the level of their health every year.”
In terms of salary, Shaharuddin said all security guards received the same pay as contained in the Malaysian Minimum Wage 2020.
He added that young people had also been encouraged to become security guards as a source of income.
“In order to increase the number of young people in the profession, the authorities, especially KDN, require security guards to undergo basic training called Certified Security Guards run by KDN, the police and PIKM.”
Meanwhile, NAF Security and Services Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Nyomek Nyeap said the age to work as a security guard was between 18 and 55.
However, he pointed out that most senior citizens aged 55 and above had shown keen interest.
“I believe most security companies have advised senior citizens to undergo a health examination first to be cleared for work.”
He also explained that the reason young people rarely work as security guards was due to their inability to commit to the profession.
“To attract their attention, we often offer a lucrative salary, the same as the government department’s basic salary, when interviewing them.”
